The 20-year-old man known as the "Barefoot Bandit" pleaded guilty last Friday to seven criminal counts, among them stealing an airplane, piloting and airplane without a license, bank robbery, and possessing a firearm as a fugitive. According to sources, the young man faces additional charges in Washington State, and has already been charged in various other crimes in the Midwest and elsewhere. All in all, sources said there is an estimated $1.4 million in damages and loss from the Barefoot Bandit's crimes.
The charges to which the young man pleaded guilty on Friday arose from his cinematic arrest last July in the Bahamas. Last July, he was brought into custody after he crashed a stolen plane in the Bahamas and attempted to escape in a stolen boat. The young man had been eluding police ever since escaping a group home in Washington in 2008.
The Barefoot Bandit has become well known for using stolen cars and airplanes to elude police for two years. He would often commit his crimes while barefoot. As a testament to his fame, the Barefoot Bandit has accumulated over 50,000 fans on Facebook.
Prosecutors urged the judge in charge of the young man's case to sentence him to up to 7 1/2 years in prison. The judge isn't bound by the prosecutors' recommendation, and may end up giving the young man more time.
Part of Friday's plea deal involves an agreement that the young man forego any profits issuing from book or movie deals covering his famous story. According to the young man's attorney, he doesn't want any profit, and would rather not have the attention.
Sentencing is scheduled for October 28.
